Looking After Your Gutters

Gutters are easy to ignore until something goes wrong. They sit at the top of the house out of sight, they collect leaves and silt all year round, and they only attract attention when water is overflowing during heavy rain or when a damp patch is spreading down a wall. By that stage the underlying problem is often well advanced. Blocked or leaking gutters are responsible for an enormous amount of avoidable damp, render damage and brick efflorescence on Middlesbrough homes, and it is all preventable with proper regular maintenance.

We carry out gutter work across Middlesbrough every week. The bulk of the work is straightforward: scheduled cleaning, repair of leaking joints, replacement of downpipes that have come loose. A smaller proportion is more involved: full gutter replacement, alignment correction on systems that no longer drain properly, and matching new uPVC fascias to the existing roofline. We use ladder access for normal work and scaffold towers where the height or working area requires it.

Most gutter problems start with blockage. Leaves, moss from the roof, and decomposing organic debris build up in the gutter trough until water can no longer drain away. The water then either overflows the front edge of the gutter — running down the wall and damaging render or brick — or backs up under the bottom course of roof tiles, where it can cause far more serious damage to roof timbers and ceilings. Annual gutter cleaning, ideally in late autumn after the leaf fall, prevents almost all of this.

When Gutters Need Replacement

Cast-iron gutters that have been on a house for fifty or sixty years often reach the end of their useful life. They rust through at the back where the water sits, the joints crack, the ironmongery holding them up corrodes, and at some point repair stops being cost-effective. We replace cast-iron gutters with modern uPVC equivalents that look broadly similar (the half-round profile is the closest match to traditional cast iron), or with deeper ogee-profile uPVC gutters that have a higher water capacity. Installation is a one or two day job for a typical semi-detached house, and the change in appearance is generally minor while the change in maintenance requirement is dramatic.

We also offer aluminium and zinc seamless gutter systems for premium installations. These are extruded on site to the exact length of the wall, eliminating joints and the leakage they can develop, and they look very smart on contemporary homes.

Fascias, Soffits and Bargeboards

While we are up at gutter level we are well placed to deal with the boards behind and under the gutters. Tired wooden fascias and soffits can be replaced with modern uPVC equivalents that never need painting and that include the necessary ventilation soffit grilles to keep the loft healthy. Bargeboards on gable ends complete the visual upgrade. We can do this either as a complete fascia/soffit/gutter package — generally the most cost-effective approach if the existing fascias are tired — or as a separate job.
